“Dr Pepper, please report to the diabetes ward”.
Obviously inspired by Airplane!, this movie follows a group of interns at a large American hospital for a year and charts the rise and fall of careers, romantic entanglements, jealousies and so forth, while spoofing TV shows (including Dr Kildare, Marcus Welby, MD and General Hospital) and often falling back on urine tests, T&A tittering and boundless bedpan bedlam for cheap laughs.
One young resident is dating a roller-skating hooker, another is a dwarf. Michael McKean plays ambitious young surgeon Simon August, while the beautiful Sean Young is never asked to do much except be beautiful and occasionally faint.
The others are a motley crew. Even the great Hector Elizondo is degraded by his role as a mobster on the lam who must visit his ailing father in drag, and as a woman, he has a flirtation with Patrick Collins, a chubby refugee from the world of TV commercials.
A purposely two-dimensional Dabney Coleman as Dr Prang is wonderful, and Harry Dean Stanton as the sodden coroner practically steals the show. Unfortunately, there’s not much show to steal . . .
The film marked Garry Marshall’s directorial debut after a long and lucrative career in television as a comedy writer and producer – including long stints with Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley and Mork & Mindy.
