While You Were Sleeping (1995) – Nostalgia Central

Lucy Moderatz (Sandra Bullock) is a lonely Chicago Transit Authority worker with a secret crush on a handsome commuter she sees every morning on the subway (Peter Gallagher), who looks like something out of GQ.

When muggers throw him head-first onto the train tracks on Christmas Day and knock him unconscious, Lucy rescues him, risking her own life to save him from an oncoming train.

At the hospital, where the hunk (he’s a lawyer named Peter Callaghan) lies in a coma, his family mistakes Lucy for his fiancée (through a series of wildly unlikely events).

They love her. She loves them. He’s asleep. What can it hurt?

She lets the family comfort her and feels so accepted that she can’t bear to tell the truth, digging an ever-deeper hole of deception for herself.

Every opportunity for her to come clean is hampered by the fact that, in so doing, she would hurt someone’s feelings or tear apart the surrogate family life she so craves (and deserves).

She also worries that revealing the truth could kill Grandma (Glynis Johns), who might just have a stroke.

Bullock is so beguiling, she makes you believe it all.

Bill Pullman brings a welcome edge as Peter’s suspicious brother, Jack, who knows that nice-girl Lucy is hardly material for his conecited shit of a brother.

If you can’t guess what happens between Lucy and Jack while Peter is sleeping, you’re in a pop culture coma. What comes next is obvious, but the film is no less enchanting for it.
