1 9 9 0 – 1 9 9 4 (Australia)
180 minute/130 minute/120 minute episodes
This music show from Australia’s Channel 7 continued the Saturday morning music culture built up over the Donnie Sutherland Sounds and Jono and Dano Saturday Morning Live years.
Debuting on 27 January 1990, the show was always meant to be a filler until something better came along – but it ended up running for four years and filling a niche in the Australian music industry.
A direct rival to Channel Ten’s similarly-titled Video Hits, the show kept Aussie teens plugged into the latest chart trends.
Hosts Michael Horrocks and Emily Symons (who was also appearing on Home and Away) did little more than link together three hours (usually) of the latest music videos
Symons left the show in December 1991 to pursue a full-time acting career in Britain, later turning up in long-running soap Emmerdale.
Her replacement was Kym Wilson, who had recently co-starred in Brides of Christ.
The final Video Smash Hits broadcast was on 24 December 1994.
Michael Horrocks subsequently pursued a career in advertising and commercial direction.
Kym Wilson turned up in Heartbreak High and enjoyed an acting career in Australia and the US.
