Originally released directly to VHS and DVD, VeggieTales was created by Phil Vischer and Mike Nawrocki to convey Christian moral themes and teach Biblical values and lessons for a child audience.
Episodes revolved around various anthropomorphic fruits and vegetables on a kitchen countertop.
Each episode also had a musical interlude (‘Silly Songs with Larry’), featuring catchy, surreal musical songs such as The Hairbrush Song, The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything, and His Cheeseburger.
Most of the VeggieTales characters were voiced by Vischer and Nawrocki, though they also cast friends and family in early episodes, including Vischer’s wife and Dan Anderson and Jim Poole, who collaborated with Vischer on dramas at their local church.
The franchise eventually expanded into broadcast television (on NBC), motion pictures (including Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie (2002) and The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything (2008), and Netflix reboots VeggieTales in the House (2014) and VeggieTales in the City (2017).
