From vampire documentaries and alien-infested supermarkets to teenage necromancy and ghostly East End gangsters, Urban Gothic presented an anthology of British horror designed for post-watershed viewing, with lashings of blood and gore, and a decent smattering of sex and nudity.
All set in modern-day London, the 22 episodes were self-contained stories – although in the second series, a covert branch of British Intelligence (called C-TEC) was introduced to investigate unusual events.
Produced on a minimal budget and shot on video, the Channel 5 series was the brainchild of 23-year-old Tom de Ville, a graduate of the BA screenwriting course at Bournemouth University.
Cast members included Richard O’Brien, Leslie Grantham, Anita Dobson, Anthony Daniels and Ingrid Pitt.
