This Saturday morning series from Fox was set in the animated realm of Toonsylvania – a land where monsters rule. But these monsters were cuddly and lovable and not scary.
Crazed scientist Dr Vic Frankenstein (voiced by David Warner) featured in regular segments with his assistant, Igor (Wayne Knight), and their dimwitted monster, known as Phil (Brad Garrett).
When Phil was bad, Igor punished him by reading a horror story from the book Melissa Screetch’s Morbid Morals. The story usually involved bratty Melissa Screetch (voiced by Nancy Cartwright), who would never heed the warnings of adults and suffered the consequences.
Another regular segment – ‘Night of the Living Fred’ – revolved around a family of zombies comprising Fred Deadman (voiced by Billy West), his sister Ashley (Kath Soucie) and their parents, Stiffany (Valery Pappas) and Dedgar (voiced by Matt Frewer in season 1 and Jess Harnell in season 2).
There was an occasional parody of a B-list horror movie, usually featuring Ace Deuce (voiced by Tom Kenny), Professor Man (voiced by Billy West), Professor Man’s daughter (voiced by Valery Pappas), Ace’s friend Newark (voiced by Billy West), and the General (voiced by Jim Cummings).
Toonsylvania was produced by Steven Spielberg and ran from 14 February to 21 December 1998.
