Set in 1890s Victorian England, this three-part BBC mini-series was based on Sarah Waters’ acclaimed 1998 debut novel, a colourful, passionate coming-of-age and coming-out story following the turbulent life, romances, and self-discovery of a young woman named Nancy “Nan” Astley (Rachael Stirling).
Nan transforms from a naive small-town girl working at her family’s oyster parlour in coastal Whitstable into a music hall performer, a prostitute, and eventually a political activist.
After seeing Kitty Butler (Keeley Hawes) perform as a male impersonator, she falls instantly in love and follows Kitty to London, initially as her dresser, before joining her on stage as a wildly successful cross-dressing double act, and – in secret – as her lover.
The romance ends abruptly when Kitty chooses social conformity and a marriage of convenience with their male manager, Walter Bliss (John Bowe).
Heartbroken and unable to return home, Nan lives on the streets of London disguised as a young man and survives by renting herself out in the Victorian sexual underworld.
She is discovered by the decadent aristocrat Diana Lethaby (Anna Chancellor), who brings her into a luxurious but toxic world of debauchery, treating Nan as her personal sexual possession.
When she is abruptly cast out by Diana and left entirely destitute, Nan seeks refuge with Florence Banner (Jodhi May), a neighbourhood social worker she briefly crossed paths with earlier.
Immersed in Florence’s socialist political circles, Nan finds a sense of community, purpose, and a mature, lasting love.
Tipping the Velvet caused a significant stir in the UK when it was released in 2002.
While highly praised by critics for its gorgeous set designs, vibrant Victorian costumes, and bold storytelling, it also drew attention for its frank, explicit depiction of lesbian sexuality and adult themes (The show’s title itself is historical British slang referring to cunnilingus).
When the series aired in the United States on BBC America, many of the more graphic sex scenes were heavily edited out.
