While on holiday in the Lake District, the Walker children – John (David Lott), Susan (Siobhan Taylor), Kitty (Susan George) and Roger (Shane Younger) – are playing with a telescope when they spot an island in the lake.
Borrowing a dinghy named Swallow, they head for the island (which they name “Wild Cat Island”) to set up a camp.
They meet up with a couple of young “pirates” – the Blackett children, Nancy (Mandy Harper) and Peggy (Paula Boyd) – in a boat called Amazon.
The Swallows and the Amazons form an alliance against a common enemy – the Blackett’s Uncle Jim (John Paul), who they call Captain Flint – after engaging in a mock battle to determine who will be their leader.
The six-part BBC production, based on the 1930 novel by Arthur Ransome, was directed by Peter Saunders and aired in September and October 1963.
