Stuart Henry – Nostalgia Central

Born in Edinburgh in 1942, Stuart Henry joined the pirate ship Radio Scotland after training as an actor at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

When the British government shut down offshore pirate stations in 1967, Henry was recruited to join the launch lineup of the newly created BBC Radio 1.

He was the station’s only Scottish DJ at the time and – with his deep, velvety Scottish lilt – he became known to millions.

He was sacked in a BBC shake-up in 1974 and joined Radio Luxembourg, where he found more creative freedom and remained until 1987.

He suffered for many years with multiple sclerosis, the illness accounting for his later distinctive, rather halting speech delivery and depriving him of the use of his limbs, so he could no longer play records.

Alongside his wife, Ollie, he continued to host his radio programmes directly from his home using specialised computer setups until his retirement in 1987.

He died in Luxembourg from complications of the illness on 24 November 1995, aged just 53.
