Launched in February 1974, this popular New Zealand children’s television magazine show was based on the British programme Blue Peter and offered a weekly mix of lively educational segments, outdoor adventures, sketches, and entertainment.
The show launched the careers of several well-known New Zealand media personalities and household names, including Phil Keoghan (who later became the long-running host of the American reality series The Amazing Race), Ian Taylor (who founded Animation Research Limited and was famous for creating the sports graphics tool Virtual Eye), Danny Watson (who became a well-known radio DJ and broadcaster), Peta Carey, Erin Dunleavy, Ole Maiava, Helen McGowan, Ray Millard, and Marcus Turner.
Spot On was produced by TVNZ. For most of its run, the show was filmed at studios in Dunedin. However, the last two seasons were produced at the TVNZ Studio 4 facility in Christchurch.
