Inspired by the success of Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads (1988), this strand of single-person dramas featured six different authors contributing monologues, including Roy Clarke’s opener ‘The Chemist’ (performed by David Jason as a Yorkshire chemist confessing the traumatic, intimate secrets of his marital life to his video camera), Bob Larbey’s ‘Ginger’ (with George Cole as an OAP now forced to sport a ginger wig to compensate for the ravages of time), ‘Royal Enclosure’, written and performed by Sheila Hancock, Carla Lane’s ‘The Last Supper’ (with Michael Angelis), John Sessions in his own ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ as a musical director who has been dragged to London to remount a Broadway musical in the West End, and Barry Humphries’ self-penned ‘Sandy Comes Home’ which recreated his character Sandy Stone from his stage show, Back With a Vengeance.
