Seven Minutes, The (1971) – Nostalgia Central

Irving Wallace’s best-seller about a pornographic book called Seven Minutes (the title refers to the average time a woman takes to achieve orgasm), a brutal rape allegedly inspired by it, and the trial of a book dealer charged with selling the book is brought to the screen here by renowned skin-flick director Russ Meyer.

The film revolves around the court case against the book. That’s pretty much it.

Meyer has between two and six former Playboy bunnies in most scenes – walking, dancing or posing in the background in such a way that it’s all but impossible for the audience to concentrate on the dramatic centre of the scene.

Attorney Mike Barrett (Wayne Maunder) has a secretary whose monumental mammaries dominate every scene she is in.

Russ Meyer shot 25 hours of film, which had to be cut and edited to 115 minutes. This film was intended to be the second of a three-picture deal with 20th Century Fox (the first film was Beyond the Valley of the Dolls).

However, when the film flopped at the box office, Meyer walked away from the deal and returned to independent filmmaking.
