Section 7 – Nostalgia Central

1 9 7 2 (New Zealand)
11 x 30 minute episodes

The appearance of Ewen Solon, star of Maigret and The Revenue Men and an expatriate New Zealander, was one of the most exciting features of New Zealand’s first urban TV drama series.

His leading role as Hugh Laking in Section 7 marked his first lengthy stay in New Zealand since having made his name as an actor in Britain.

Two other Kiwi actors co-starred as probation officers working under Laking: Glynis McNicoII – well-known for her radio and television work – and Ian Mune, who had appeared extensively on stage and television, including an episode of the successful NZBC drama series, Pukemanu.

Taking its name from the section of the Criminal Justice Act 1954 which placed offenders on probation, Section 7 focussed on a Probation Service office and addressed issues of the day including new migrants, ship girls and domestic violence.

More popular with critics than the public, the series was limited to 11 half-hour episodes.
