The characters of Scratch ‘n’ Sniff (a pair of puppet hyenas) first appeared in Holly & Stephen’s Saturday Showdown (formerly known as Ministry of Mayhem).

Here, they presented their own game show, which pitted five kids in a high-stakes contest for the gift of life, competing to avoid being eaten by the always-hungry hyenas.

To survive, the kids had to answer multiple-choice questions correctly. If they got a question wrong, they took a step forward. If they answered correctly, they could nominate another contestant to take a step forward.

Three steps forward placed a contestant in the ‘drop zone’ to face the notoriously unfair “Question Impossible,” where a wrong answer resulted in elimination, dropping them into the hyenas’ Pot of Peril, where they would be “boiled” (in a giant vat of green slime) and become dinner for Scratch ‘n’ Sniff.

One lucky contestant would leave with not only their life, but a cheap plastic trophy called The Den of Doom Doodah.
