Comedy across the sectarian divide in Belfast, with chums since childhood, Catholic Tommy (Des McAleer) and Protestant Dougy (Sean McGinley) working together in the small ‘Safe And Sound’ motor-garage, where Dougy is the management, and Tommy his hardworking mechanic.

In the opening episode, Tommy fails in his attempt to restart his marriage to Maggie (Gabrielle Reidy) and is therefore forced to lodge with his sister Eleanor (Michelle Fairley), a sexually hyperactive good-time girl with whom Dougy is besotted.

All the major protagonists have volatile relationships with one another, and their encounters crackle with heated discussions and fiery arguments.

Filmed entirely on location and aired without a laugh track, Safe And Sound was a quality comedy unafraid to tackle controversial issues.

The ‘troubles’, while never the major theme, permeated the entire proceedings like a background wash.
