Shawn Spencer (James Roday) is a hyper-observant slacker with a near-photographic memory who pretends to be psychic, using his extreme powers of observation to mimic supernatural visions.

He inherited his superior observational skills from his (now-estranged) police officer father, Henry (Corbin Bernsen).

Shawn owns a fake psychic detective agency called ‘Psych’, and he and his childhood best friend, Burton “Gus” Guster (Dulé Hill), work as consultants for the Santa Barbara Police Department.

Their liaisons at the Police Department include gruff, by-the-book Head Detective Carlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson), who is highly sceptical about Shawn’s psychic gifts; his junior partner Detective Juliet O’Hara (Maggie Lawson), who develops a long-running, slow-burn romantic relationship with Shawn; and Chief Karen Vick (Kirsten Nelson), the interim (and later permanent) Chief of the SBPD who frequently hires the duo despite their unorthodox methods.

Shawn and Gus go through many ups and downs as they try to keep the ruse going.

Gus drives a Toyota Echo nicknamed ‘the Blueberry,’ and a running gag involved a pineapple placed somewhere in every episode.

Big names who guest-starred on the series included Cybill Shepherd, William Shatner, Malcolm McDowell, Tim Curry, Danny Glover, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, George Takei, Lou Diamond Phillips, Anthony Michael Hall, Olivia d’Abo, Lesley Ann Warren, Peggy Lipton, Sherilyn Fenn, Jason Priestley, Corey Feldman, William Devane, Cheech Marin, Vinnie Jones, Christopher Lloyd and Val Kilmer.

Aired on the USA Network, the show – although set in Santa Barbara, California – was filmed in White Rock, British Columbia. The production took eight palm trees to every outdoor set and location to maintain the illusion.

Following the series finale, intense fan demand led to three television movies: Psych: The Movie (2017), Psych 2: Lassie Come Home (2020), and Psych 3: This Is Gus (2021).
