This BBC series revolved around the Castlefield Blues – an underfunded and mismanaged women’s soccer team in the (fictional) town of Castlefield, South Yorkshire,

The team struggled to win games, but the players remained loyal to one another despite their losing record.

The players’ lives off the field involved relationships and infidelities, with the storylines balancing comedic moments with heavy domestic drama.

Team veteran Geraldine Powell (Lorraine Ashbourne) was married to Dave (Tim Dantay) but had a heated affair with his brother, Rick (Nicholas Gleaves). When Dave discovered the infidelity, their relationship imploded. The situation worsened when Geraldine fell pregnant.

For a long time, the paternity of the baby (George) hung in the balance. Geraldine told Dave the child was his, but Rick was convinced he was the father and continued to forcefully insert himself into her life.

Meanwhile, Geraldine’s sister Diane Powell (Debra Stephenson) was dealing with her own chaotic romantic entanglements and local drama.

Another emotional cornerstone of the early episodes involved the dynamic between Theresa Mullen (Lesley Sharp) and Jo Mullen (Jo McInnes). Jo grew up- raised under the watchful eye of the strict family matriarch, Mrs Mullen (Elizabeth Spriggs) – believing Theresa was her sister.

After 19 years, Theresa confessed she was actually Jo’s biological mother, not her sister. The revelation caused a massive, painful rift that the entire team had to awkwardly navigate.

Rita (Melanie Hill) and James (James Nesbitt) Dolan were plagued by intense financial struggles, a lack of career direction, and trust issues, culminating in a dramatic day of reckoning.

Following a turbulent fifth and final series in 2002, a group of local youths (including Rita’s distraught son, Martin) vandalised the Castlefield Blues clubhouse and set it on fire. The club also lost its major sponsor when Jim’s factory went into receivership.

With the physical clubhouse burned to the ground and no funding left, the team fractured under a wave of mutual finger-pointing and intense guilt.

The BBC chose not to renew the show for a sixth series, so viewers never got to see if the Castlefield Blues ever recovered.

Created by screenwriter Kay Mellor, the series was inspired by Pete Davies’s non-fiction book I Lost My Heart to the Belles, which followed the real-life Doncaster Belles. Although set in South Yorkshire, much of the series was filmed in Ilkeston, Derbyshire.

The theme tune, Blue, was by Alison Moyet.
