Paul Burnett – Nostalgia Central

Paul Burnett was born into a show-business family in 1943 and attended 12 schools, living mainly in caravans.

He began broadcasting while serving with the Royal Air Force (RAF)in Aden. He worked in his free time as a DJ at a Northern disco, buying himself out of the Air Force in 1966 to take a job with one of the pirate stations – Radio 270 off Scarborough, switching briefly to Manx Radio in 1967.

Subsequently, he joined Radio Luxembourg (208) before moving to Radio 1 in 1974, where he presented a Sunday morning show and hosted the Top 20 chart programme.

For several years, he hosted the highly rated weekday show from noon to 2:00 PM.

He and fellow DJ Dave Lee Travis released a parody cover of the American hit Convoy under the name Laurie Lingo & The Dipsticks. The track became a hit, peaking at #4 on the official UK Singles Chart.

Fired from Radio 1 in 1982, he returned to commercial radio as a breakfast host on Pennine before going south to Capital later that year.
