The film begins in post-Civil War Boston, where The Three Stooges – Larry, Moe, and Curly Joe – work as bumbling printers at the Society for the Preservation of American Wildlife. Their antics quickly land them on assignment out West, tasked with accompanying mild-mannered assistant editor Kenneth Cabot (played by a pre-Batman Adam West), who is to cover the mass slaughter of buffalo.
Their destination is the frontier town of Casper, Wyoming, where villain Rance Roden (Don Lamond) is orchestrating a sinister plan.
By driving the buffalo to near extinction and stirring unrest among the local Native tribes, Roden hopes to undermine the US Cavalry’s presence – paving the way for him and his cronies to seize control of the Western territories.
Upon arrival, Cabot unexpectedly earns the role of town sheriff, thanks to his apparent sharpshooting skills – secretly aided by famed markswoman Annie Oakley (Nancy Kovack), who has taken a romantic interest in him.
To eliminate Cabot, Rance assembles a rogues’ gallery of legendary outlaws, including Jesse James (Wayne Mack), Wild Bill Hickok (Paul Shannon), and Wyatt Earp (Bill Camfield). However, the Stooges foil the plot by sneaking into the gang’s hideout and sabotaging their weapons. Their secret weapon? Printer’s glue – applied so effectively that no gunslinger can draw his weapon from a glued-up holster.
Rance’s backup plan involves arming local tribes, even supplying them with a heavily fortified wagon outfitted with a cannon and a Gatling gun. But once again, the Stooges intervene – this time capturing photographic proof of the illegal arms deal, putting an end to the scheme.
After the usual chaos and slapstick gunfights, all is resolved. The buffalo are spared, Cabot and Annie marry, and even the once-notorious gunslingers see the error of their ways and reform.
Released in some regions under the title The Three Stooges Meet the Gunslingers, this film marked the sixth and final feature starring The Three Stooges, following their resurgence in popularity in 1959.
The movie was written, produced, and directed by Norman Maurer, Moe Howard’s son-in-law.
