Mystery on Monster Island (1981) – Nostalgia Central

Originally titled Misterio en la Isla de Los Monstruos and loosely adapted from the 1882 Jules Verne novel Godfrey Morgan, this adventure-comedy-horror film directed by Spanish cult filmmaker Juan Piquer Simón was a joint US/Spanish co-production filmed in the Canary Islands.

San Francisco billionaire William T. Kolderup (Peter Cushing) enters a fierce bidding war with a rival named Taskinar (Terence Stamp) to purchase a remote island. Taskinar suspects the island contains a hidden fortune in gold, but he loses the bid.

Meanwhile, Kolderup’s adventurous nephew, Jeff (Ian Sera), refuses to marry his fiancée until he can travel the world.

Kolderup agrees to send Jeff on a global sea voyage, accompanied by a bumbling tutor, Professor Thomas Artelect (David Hatton). Mid-voyage, their ship is violently attacked by humanoid sea creatures, leaving the duo shipwrecked on a desolate, uncharted island.

To survive, Jeff and the professor build a bamboo fort, craft rudimentary traps, and navigate a landscape packed with prehistoric dinosaurs, cannibal tribes, gold-hunting pirates, and massive kelp monsters (obviously just a group of stuntmen covered in green-painted rags and plastic vines, shuffling slowly).

Jeff rescues a local native from a cannibal tribe and names him Carefinatu (Gasphar Ipua).

They also cross paths with a beautiful, shipwrecked Frenchwoman named Dominique (Blanca Estrada).

Just as the pirates corner Jeff and the final battle reaches its peak, it is revealed that the entire monster island experience was an elaborate, staged hoax orchestrated by Uncle Kolderup.

Wanting to teach his pampered nephew about discipline, courage, and responsibility before marriage, Kolderup bought the island and hired a theatrical troupe.

Yes, the terrifying gill-men and prehistoric dinosaurs were just actors in cheap rubber suits and mechanical props, and the “cannibals”, Carefinatu, and the French castaway Dominique were all paid actors following a script.

Even the bumbling Professor Artelect was in on the ruse the entire time.

Realising the island was occupied by actors, Taskinar sent real, bloodthirsty pirates to raid it and steal the gold cache. The life-or-death stakes suddenly became real for Jeff in the third act.

Jeff successfully uses his newly learned survival skills to defeat the real pirates, and Uncle Kolderup and Meg arrive on the island via ship to rescue them.

The movie concludes with the pirates trapped, a volcano erupting, and Jeff finally ready to return home and marry Meg.

The film –  full of low-budget special effects and rubber monster suits (with very visible zippers down their backs) – features Spanish horror legend Paul Naschy as a pirate captain named Flynt, and actress Ana Obregón as Jeff’s fiancée, Meg.
