My Girl is set in small town Pennsylvania in the early 1970s, where kids ride their bikes for fun, and election posters for Nixon and Agnew are plastered on the walls.
Harry Sultenfuss (Dan Aykroyd) is an undertaker who has been singularly devoted to death since his wife died of complications following childbirth eleven years ago.
His older brother Phil Sultenfuss (Richard Masur), a veteran of the Korean War, has a steel plate in his head and a tendency to receive distant radio transmissions.
Grandmother Gramoo Sultenfuss (Ann Nelson) sits in the parlour most of the day, silent until suddenly she breaks into a spirited rendition of I Got Rhythm at the most inappropriate moments.
Then there’s recently divorced cosmetologist Shelly DeVoto (Jamie Lee Curtis), the newest member of the household, so anxious for a job that she does makeup for the deceased.
It’s no wonder that Vada Sultenfuss (newcomer Anna Chlumsky) is such a unique 11-year-old girl, alternately cheerful, haunted by hypochondria, and obsessed with death. Her Mood Ring is perpetually black.
But her obsessions are balanced by her crush on English teacher, Mr Bixler (Griffin Dunne) and her endearing friendship with the generally timid and likeable Thomas J. Sennett (Home Alone kid Macaulay Culkin).
The friendship and gameplaying between Vada and Thomas J create some of the best moments in the film.
There’s a surprising and none-too-happy twist when Thomas J suddenly dies after being stung by a swarm of bees.
