Following his successful 1973 BBC2 series They Sold a Million, crooner Vince Hill repeated the formula in November and December 1975 with The Musical Time Machine.

Once again, he was assisted by dance troupe The Young Generation and The Alyn Ainsworth Orchestra.

He was also “assisted” this time around by a computer called ERIC (short for Electronic Recall Information Collator), which ran much of the show and provided Vince with facts, trivia, and figures about the featured songs and musicals.

The programme reprised past Top 20 hits using a mix of archive film clips, video clips from old musicals, and live studio performances.

The show returned for a second series of seven episodes in January 1977.

Featured musical guests included The Nolan Sisters, Johnny Nash, The Bachelors, Dionne Warwick, Johnny Mathis, Tammy Wynette, Lynsey de Paul, Duane Eddy, The Bay City Rollers, The Three Degrees, Jimmy Ruffin, Guys ‘n’ Dolls, Leo Sayer, Frankie Vaughan, and Gladys Knight & The Pips.
