30 x 30 minute episodes
This American sketch comedy series, hosted by Bob Odenkirk and David Cross, aired on HBO from 3 November 1995 to 28 December 1998.
Cross and Odenkirk introduce most episodes as semi-fictionalised versions of themselves before presenting a mixture of on-stage live sketches and pre-taped segments. Each sketch transitioned to the next by way of a link in a manner reminiscent of Monty Python’s Flying Circus.
A minor character in one sketch often returned as the main character in the next, and common themes or storylines recurred throughout an episode.
The show featured an ensemble of actors and alternative comedians. A featured performer in the early seasons, Jack Black used the show to debut his band, Tenacious D and went on to become a major Hollywood A-lister.
Tom Kenny became the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants for over 25 years.
Mr Show spawned a spin-off movie, Run Ronnie Run, which was screened at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival but went straight to DVD.
Bob Odenkirk went on to a successful run as Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. David Cross played Tobias Fünke on Arrested Development.
