Minority Report (2002) – Nostalgia Central

Set in Washington DC in the year 2054, the story – based loosely on a 1956 short story by Philip K. Dick – follows a specialised police unit called “Precrime” that uses three psychic humans suspended in a liquid pool – the “precogs” – to predict and prevent murders before they happen.

The Precogs sense impending homicides, generating digital visions of the names, dates, and locations before the events occur. Precrime Chief John Anderton (Tom Cruise processes these visions to arrest suspects before they can act.

The plot shifts into overdrive when Anderton is unexpectedly identified by the precogs as the perpetrator of a future murder (of a man named Leo Crow), forcing him to go on the run from his own unit – led by ambitious federal agent Danny Witwer (Colin Farrell) – to prove his innocence.

Anderton seeks out Dr Iris Hineman (Lois Smith), the scientist who created Precrime. She reveals a flaw: occasionally, one Precog – usually the most powerful one, Agatha (Samantha Morton) – sees an alternate future than the other two.

This dissenting vision is called a “minority report”, and it is deleted from the public archives to maintain total faith in the system. To prove his innocence, Anderton must download the report directly from Agatha’s mind.

To sneak back into Precrime, Anderton undergoes a black-market eye transplant to bypass the city’s ubiquitous biometric iris scanners. He successfully infiltrates the facility and kidnaps Agatha from her containment pool.

Anderton tracks down Leo Crow to a hotel room. There, he discovers a bed covered in photos of children, including his own missing son, Sean.

Believing Crow is the man who kidnapped and killed his son six years earlier, Anderton prepares to execute him.

However, Agatha reminds Anderton that he has a choice, proving free will exists.

Anderton lowers his gun and tries to arrest Crow instead, but a desperate Crow confesses that he was actually hired by an unknown figure to plant the photos and pretend to be the kidnapper. In exchange, Crow’s family would receive financial security.

To ensure his family gets paid, Crow grabs Anderton’s gun hand and pulls the trigger, forcing his own death exactly as predicted.

Anderton escapes but is eventually captured and locked away in a stasis prison.

Meanwhile, Witwer inspects the crime scene and realises Anderton was framed.

He discovers two separate Precog visions of Crow’s death existed, but they looked identical, meaning the mastermind used a previous vision to mask a real murder.

Witwer presents this to Precrime Director Lamar Burgess (Max von Sydow), who promptly kills Witwer to protect the secret.

Anderton’s estranged wife, Lara (Kathryn Morris), figures out Burgess is the culprit and breaks Anderton out of prison. At a celebratory gala for Precrime’s nationwide expansion, Anderton plays Agatha’s hidden minority report video to the crowd.

The footage exposes that years ago, Burgess murdered Agatha’s mother, Anne Lively (Jessica Harper), to keep custody of the gifted Precog. Burgess hid his crime by mimicking a predicted murder that Precrime had already prevented.

Cornered by Anderton, Burgess faces a paradox. The Precogs generate a final vision: Burgess will kill Anderton. If Burgess kills Anderton, he goes to prison, and Precrime is validated. If he spares Anderton, Precrime will be proven flawed and shut down.

Burgess chooses to commit suicide instead.

In the aftermath, Precrime is officially dismantled, all pre-arrested prisoners are pardoned, and the three Precogs are sent to live out their lives in peaceful isolation.

A high-octane philosophical thriller, Minority Report brings into focus the ethical boundaries of preventative law enforcement and the consequences of government surveillance.

Looking back today, Minority Report was ahead of the curve in its exploration of personalised targeted advertising, biometric surveillance, and gestural computer interfaces.
