This lavish four-part serial from the ABC in Australia was based on the novel of the same name by Martin Boyd, and starred Wendy Hughes in the title role, tracing her story from the early 1900s to World War II, between England and Australia.
The beautiful and talented Lucinda was born into a wealthy Melbourne family, but spurned the love of the distinguished family friend Tony Duff (Sam Neill) and married the dashing aide-de-camp to the Governor, Hugo Brayford (Barry Quin).
Lucinda should have enjoyed a life of fairy-tale happiness, but she suffered the tragedies of her husband’s cruel disfigurement in the war, her lover’s rejection, and the cruel death of her only son, Stephen.
Some of Melbourne’s outstanding historic houses were used for location filming for the miniseries, including the Toorak ‘land-boom’ mansion, Illawarra; the National Trust’s Ripponlea Estate; and Werribee Park, a 500-hectare park surrounding the stately Chirnside mansion, 40 km south-west of Melbourne.
Other scenes were filmed at Melbourne University’s Trinity College, the Florence staircase in the National Theatre, and Portsea beach.
