This short-lived Anglicised remake of NBC’s hit US comedy series Mad About You regurgitated scripts word-for-word from the first two seasons of the American series but completely failed to find British cultural equivalents for the essential New York-ishness of the original.
Instead of Paul and Jamie Buchman, we now had newlyweds Mike and Kate Adams juggling their careers and home life (in their London Docklands flat), while trying to keep that honeymoon spirit alive.
Mike (John Gordon Sinclair, the former teen star of Gregory’s Girl, all grown up) was a documentary filmmaker with a patchy track record and ambitions to work in the movies. Kate (Trevyn McDowell) was a busy PR person with a far more successful career.
Becky (Kim Thomson) was Kate’s unmarried sister, and Lander (Gary Love) was Mike’s slobbish, womanising best mate from his bachelor days. Rounding out the cast were the Adams’ dull but loyal friends Ruth (Leila Kenzle) and her husband Tom (Richard Kind).
The British adaptation was a pale imitation – strangely uninvolving and almost sterile – and proved to be nowhere near as popular as the original American series, either with viewers or critics.
