Earnest and good-natured Kirk Hartman (Growing Pains star Kirk Cameron) is a recent college graduate and talented artist who has moved to New York City in search of fame and fortune.
He works as a graphic artist (painting billboards), dreams of creating his own comic book and becoming a famous illustrator, and has a small apartment in Greenwich Village.
But before he has a chance to take a bite out of the Big Apple, Kirk is thrust into the role of guardian to his three younger siblings – 15-year-old Corey (Will Estes), 13-year-old Phoebe (Taylor Fry), and 7-year-old tantrum-tossing Russell (Courtland Mead).
The orphaned Hartman younguns were being raised in small-town Ohio by devoted Aunt Zelda (Pat Crawford Brown). Alas, Zelda has split for Florida at the age of 70 to get married.
Naturally, Kirk hasn’t a clue about raising children, so his building manager, Sally (Debra Mooney), pops in to critique his efforts.
Kirk’s carefree friend (and former college roommate), Eddie (Louis Vanaria), works as a clown at the local car wash (and is later employed as a valet at the Parker Health Club).
In the final season, Kirk married his neighbour, Elizabeth Waters (played by Kirk Cameron’s real-life wife, Chelsea Noble), a young physician at St Bernard’s Hospital and the newly formed family moved to a larger apartment.
