Debuting on 24 February 2004, this stylish British crime drama followed a tight-knit group of sophisticated London-based con artists who specialised in “long cons” – highly complex, extended deceptions that required meticulous planning and deep commitment but yielded massive financial payouts.

Operating under a strict moral code, the crew never conned an honest person, but targeted wealthy, greedy, and corrupt individuals whose own avarice made them perfect marks.

Masterful and highly intelligent Mickey Stone (Adrian Lester, pictured at right) was the group’s original leader and the primary architect of the long cons.

When Lester temporarily left the show in series 4, impetuous, talented former pickpocket Danny Blue (Marc Warren, pictured below) took over the leadership role,

Mickey returned in series 5 and stayed to the end of the show’s run.

Legendary, old-school “roper” Albert Stroller (Robert Vaughn) was responsible for scouting out wealthy targets and initiating the hook.

Ash Morgan (Robert Glenister) was the technical genius and “fixer” who handled locations, equipment, props, and intricate setups.

Stacie Monroe (Jaime Murray) was the alluring master of distraction who used her charm, intellect, and acting skills to manipulate marks.

Later additions to the crew included Billy Bond (Ashley Walters) and sibling grifters Sean and Emma Kennedy (Matt Di Angelo and Kelly Adams).

Nearly every episode featured the gang planning their schemes or celebrating their wins at a local bar run by their easily duped friend, Eddie (Rob Jarvis).

Characters frequently froze time or looked directly into the camera to explain the mechanics, jargon, or psychological tricks behind a con directly to the viewer.

Episodes were structured so the viewer was intentionally kept in the dark about critical behind-the-scenes backup plans. When a con appeared to go horribly wrong, a final flashback sequence typically revealed how the crew anticipated the crisis and successfully fooled both the mark and the viewer.

Robert Vaughn passed away on 11 November 2016, aged 83, after undergoing a year-long treatment for leukaemia.

• Mark: The chosen target or victim of the scam, selected specifically because their own greed or vanity makes them vulnerable.
• Inside Man: The con artist who stays close to the target, playing a specific character to win their trust and direct their actions.
• Roper: The team member who finds the target, builds the initial rapport, and reels them into the trap.
• Fixer: The logistics expert who secures fake IDs, luxury cars, dummy offices, and uniform disguises.
• Long Con: A massive, multi-staged deception taking days or weeks to execute, requiring heavy financial investment and a full team to take a wealthy target for a fortune.
• Short Con: A fast, low-stakes scam designed to make quick cash from everyday people, such as street-level three-card monte or rigged betting games.
• Hook: The irresistible, highly lucrative business offer or investment opportunity used to capture the mark’s attention.
• Flop: A staged accident – like getting hit by a slow-moving luxury car – used to extort money or create a distraction.
• Badger Game: A con in which the victim is tricked into compromising positions in order to make them vulnerable to blackmail.
• Pig in a Poke: Selling a high-value item inside a sealed container, only for the victim to discover later that the contents are completely worthless.
• Convincer: A deliberate move where the team lets the mark make a small, easy profit early on to make the fictional scheme look completely legitimate.
• Blow-Off: The final phase of the con, in which the team safely escapes, leaving the mark confused or too embarrassed by their own illegal actions to call the police.
