Pamela Reed played Judge Sydney Solomon – a hardliner who could face down a snarling Doberman on the bench. A single parent of four, she liked to delude herself that she was just as tough at home. In fact, she was a softie whose objections to her kids’ behaviour were rarely sustained.

Her 13-year-old son, Marshall (Robert Hy Gorman), who was attached to his laptop by the fingers, was constantly guilty of espionage. No significant event took place in their home without Marshall tapping out the details to his father over the Internet.

Her youngest child, 11-year-old Ellis (Phillip Van Dyke), adopted the Attention Deficit Disorder defence whenever he ran afoul of his mother’s rules.

Sydney’s only daughter. 16-year-old Neal (Meghann Haldeman) was regularly in contempt of the judge.

But Sydney’s tough-love philosophy got its sternest test when her eldest, Mike (Breckin Meyer), came home from college. Ostensibly, he was back to celebrate his birthday. Truth was, he had decided to drop out.

Sydney told him that if this was true, he could drop out of living at home and get on with his life. When he took up residence in his Volvo, she had him towed.

The war of wills, like everything else in The Home Court, had a predictable outcome.

Sydney’s pseudo-sophisticate sister, Greer (Meagen Fay), was her confidante and shoulder to cry on.
