Set in 1969, Hippies stars Simon Pegg as Ray Purbbs, the editor of an Oz-style underground magazine called Mouth, which he produces in his flat in Notting Hill Gate (London).

His friends are the feminist Jill Sprint (Sally Phillips), the laid-back Alex Picton-Dinch (Julian Rhind-Tutt), and the half-witted Hugo Yemp (Darren Boyd).

Created by Father Ted writers Arthur Mathews and Graham Linehan, the BBC series cheekily parodies a number of the icons of the late 1960s, including Hair, Woodstock, The Graduate, and even the infamous Oz obscenity trial.

Guest stars included Eleanor Bron, Dora Bryan, Peter Serafinowicz and Rolf Saxon.

A second series was commissioned, but was never made after Mathews was put off by the adverse critical reaction.
