Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) – Nostalgia Central

Now aged 14 and starting his fourth year at Hogwarts, young wizard Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) faces a daunting challenge after being mysteriously entered into the Triwizard Tournament – a magic tournament between three well-known rival schools of magic: Hogwarts, Beauxbatons Academy, and the Durmstrang Institute.

As part of the Olympic-style tournament, the competitors must find the Triwizard Cup, hidden somewhere within a maze shrouded in a perma-mist. Dumbledore ominously advises the challengers that “people change in the maze.”

It isn’t long before bad things start to happen, with Fleur Delacour (Clémence Poésy) being stunned and pulled into the hedges, and Viktor Krum (Stanislav Ianevski) cursed, compelled to torture Cedric Diggory (Robert Pattinson).

We later discover all of this is happening to orchestrate Harry’s win, but his morals prevail, and he helps Cedric take the joint victory with him.

As Harry and Cedric lift the cup, they find it has been replaced with a “portkey”, transporting them to a graveyard and coming face-to-face with Peter Pettigrew (Timothy Spall) and Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes), where Cedric is callously killed by Pettigrew (aka Wormtail), leaving Harry to witness the horror of Voldemort’s return in bodily form as he is tortured by the Dark Lord.

The imaginative set pieces more than compensate for Radcliffe’s anaemic performance, and among the treats are a brilliantly rendered dragon and some creepy mermaids (reinvented here as wild-haired and sharp-toothed monsters).

British director Mike Newell stamps his mark on the movie – aided by the introduction of many new and beloved characters, including Fleur Delacour, Viktor Krum, Cedric Diggory, Professor “Mad-Eye” Moody (Brendan Gleeson), Rita Skeeter (Miranda Richardson), and Barty Crouch Jr. (David Tennant) – making Hogwarts seem like the most fabulous school ever.
