“Welcome to Jantique, One Happy Island!”

This odd mix of medical drama, eccentric characters, reggae music, beautiful scenery and fun in the sun was filmed on location in Jamaica and produced for ABC by the creators of St Elsewhere, I’ll Fly Away and Northern Exposure (It was, in a sense, *Southern* Exposure).

Dr Henry Croft (Roy Dotrice) was a barrel-chested, maverick doctor who had made $55 million from selling the patent for the revolutionary new hip-replacement system he had invented.

Rebuffed by the stuffy American medical establishment, he used the money to found Croft University Medical School on the (fictional) sunny Caribbean island of Jantique, where he could train other “mavericks” like himself.

Among his young students were fun-loving Alex (Daniel Jenkins), dedicated Midwesterner Kathleen (Joanna Going), metaphysical loner Kim (Camilo Gallardo), materialistic Cheryl (Erika Alexander), insecure Charlie (Andrew Lauer), and arrogant Colin (Robert Duncan McNeill).

Henry’s sidekick and chief administrator was serious Dr Norris (Carl Lumbly), a Jantiquan native, who oversaw a staff that included the seductive, skinny-dipping Dr Alice Davis (June Chadwick, pictured below), after whom Alex lusted; libidinous Dr Van DeWeghe (Charles Keating), and Nurse Sarah (Pauline Stone).

Anguish alternated with frolics on the beaches, in bed, and in the sunny classrooms, as Henry’s enemies in the U.S. tried to close him down.
