This “green” magazine show for kids from Central Independent Television was filmed in Nottingham and presented by ecology expert Chris Packham – well known to young viewers from the BBC’s The Really Wild Show, which he co-presented for five series.
Chris was assisted by Fungus the Bogeyman (a slimy, larger-than-life character from Raymond Briggs) and a studio full of environmentally-friendly youngsters.
Fungus was replaced in the 1993 series by a rare seven-foot-tall, 200-million-year-old rock troll named Grannit. Both Fungus and Grannit were played by Roger Bunnage.
The show featured up-to-the-minute environmentally-related news from around the world, celebrity guests, film reports on what children were doing to improve their environment, and a barrage of information on what to do, how to do it, and who to contact to get started.
Each of the ten shows in each series focused on a particular aspect of the environment, such as waste, pollution, energy, animals and food.
Guests on the show included Craig Charles, Ben Elton, Thomas Aldwinckle, Josie Lawrence, Gareth Parrington (Harry Holdsworth from Harry’s Mad), and Pat Sharp.
The show initially aired on ITV on Thursday afternoons, moving to Mondays for the 1993 series.
