This gentle BBC sitcom starred Andrew Sachs as Nat Silver and Frances De La Tour as his wife Shirley, a Jewish couple who ran a cheap and cheerful cafe called the Silver Diner in an alley connecting London’s City and East End.
With the help of their daughter Lorraine (Sarah Malin) and waiters Dean (Danny Swanson) and Willie (Oscar Quitak), they struggled to make a living while scheming to marry off their daughter.
Shirley was an all-action dynamo while Nat preferred a quiet game of chess with his Chinese friend, Leonard (David Yip), who ran the takeaway down the road, or tending to his tropical fish.
The Silvers fought like cat and dog but were entirely devoted to each other.
The series began its six-week run on Thursday 27 May 1993.
