Down to Earth was the first original sitcom produced and aired by Ted Turner’s Atlanta-based cable superstation, WTBS.

After being struck down by a trolley car in 1925, flapper Ethel MacDoogan (Carol Mansell) waits in limbo for sixty years as ‘Angel 972’ for a chance to help a family and earn her wings.

That chance arrives in the 1980s in the form of the Preston family.

Her earthly assignment is to serve as housekeeper and peacemaker to prosperous real estate executive and widowed father Richard Preston (initially played by Stephen Johnson and later by Bewitched star Dick Sargent) and his three children – 15-year-old Duane (David Kaufman), 13-year-old Lissy (Kyle Richards), and 8-year-old Jay Jay (Randy Josselyn) – the only one who knew she was dead.

This, says her stuffy boss, Charles Divine (Lester Fletcher), is her last chance to earn her wings. Rip Taylor popped in during the later years as Ethel’s mentor angel, Stanley McCloud.
