This sci-fi thriller from FOX aired for two seasons from February 2009 to January 2010. Created by Joss Whedon (creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly), the series revolved around the “Dollhouse” – a highly illegal, subterranean facility run by the powerful Rossum Corporation.

The facility housed “Actives” (or “Dolls”) – individuals whose original memories, personalities, and identities have been completely wiped.

Using a futuristic neural technology, the Dolls were stored in a blank, child-like state.

When a wealthy client paid the Rossum Corporation, a technician “printed” a custom-made combination of skills, languages, and personalities onto the Active for a specific “engagement” (which could range from high-stakes espionage and romantic fantasies to criminal activities).

Afterwards, the Doll’s mind was wiped clean again.

The central conflict arose when the lead Active, Echo (Eliza Dushku), began to develop self-awareness and retained fragmented memories across her multiple wipes.

In her past life, she had been a college activist named Caroline Farrell who tried to expose the Rossum Corporation before being forced into a five-year Dollhouse contract.

Echo’s deeply protective handler – who accompanied her on missions to ensure her safety- was former cop Boyd Langton (Harry Lennix), who constantly questioned the ethics of his job.

Others at the Dollhouse included Topher Brink (Fran Kranz), the brilliant, cynical, and morally ambiguous chief programmer who manipulated the Actives’ neural architecture; an Active named Victor (Enver Gjokaj) who, like Echo, began developing independent feelings and memories; Sierra (Dichen Lachman), an Active who was forcibly committed to the Dollhouse by a powerful man who wanted to manipulate her; and Adelle DeWitt (Olivia Williams), the elegant, cold, and calculated director of the Los Angeles Dollhouse facility.

A disgraced FBI special agent named Paul Ballard (Tahmoh Penikett) was obsessively dedicated to uncovering the urban legend of the Dollhouse and rescuing Echo.

A massive plot twist near the end of Season 2 revealed that Boyd Langton – far from being the deeply protective handler who genuinely cared for Echo and actively questioned the ethics of the organisation – was actually Clyde Randolph, the co-founder and ultimate mastermind behind the Rossum Corporation.

Randolph had transferred his consciousness into a Doll body and remained close to Echo because her unique brain structure held the key to the final piece of Rossum’s technology – an immunity to the global mind-wipe apocalypse.

He wanted to guide Echo’s evolution and self-awareness, not to free her, but to harvest her brain spinal fluid so he could use it to create a vaccine that would protect a select elite group of world leaders from the impending global tech apocalypse, allowing them to rule over a wiped humanity.
