Chicago Story – Nostalgia Central

This NBC series, set in Chicago (obviously), debuted on 6 March 1982 and depicted the lives of a group of doctors, lawyers and police officers who banded together to solve baffling crimes.

Regulars included Dr Judith Bergstrom (Maud Adams) from Cook County Hospital; attorney Lou Pellegrino (Vincent Baggetta), a public defender; attorney Megan Powers (Molly Cheek); Patrolman Joe Gilland (Dennis Franz); Dr Max Carson (Kristoffer Tabori); and District Attorney Kenneth A. Dutton (Craig T. Nelson).

It was a cop show, a medical show and a legal show all at once. If everything had gone according to plan, Chicago Story would have been a major hit series. It wasn’t.

The show was weighed down by stereotypes; the first episode was a stinker; subsequent episodes were poorly scheduled (first on Saturday nights (NBC’s “Bermuda Triangle”) and then on Fridays, where it was up against Dallas); and 90 minutes was simply too long for many viewers.

In the end, the show never found a big enough audience. It was gone by the end of August.
