Brother Beyond formed in 1985 and signed to EMI Records in 1986.
Their first four singles, I Should Have Lied, How Many Times?, Chain Gang Smile – produced by Don Was from Was (Not Was) – and an early version of Can You Keep a Secret?, were minor chart successes in the UK Singles Chart.
When legendary songwriters and producers Stock, Aitken & Waterman (SAW) auctioned off their services to charity, Brother Beyond (and their label EMI) won the auction. The first single to be released from the subsequent studio session was the Motown-influenced The Harder I Try, which became a UK #2 hit.
He Ain’t No Competition followed, reaching #6, but the subsequent single releases from the Get Even album failed to make the UK Top Ten.
After a brief hiatus, Brother Beyond returned with the single Drive On in late 1989. It peaked at #39.
Their second album, Trust, included a cover of When Will I See You Again? by The Three Degrees, which peaked outside the UK top 40. The final release from their album was the title track, which stalled at #53.
In 1990, the single The Girl I Used to Know reached #27 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. Follow-up single Just a Heartbeat Away, failed to chart.
The group disbanded that same year, with vocalist Nathan Moore joining boy band Worlds Apart. Drummer Steve Alexander toured with Duran Duran for six years.
