A brutal murder shatters the idyllic village of Ashminster. When rebellious schoolgirl Ann Devenish (Emilia Fox) witnesses the body, the shock has disturbing psychological consequences for the rebellious teenager.
Confused, angry and frightened by inexplicable lapses in her memory, Ann spirals into a web of lies, theft, violence and madness, much to the exasperation of her father (Jim Carter), the local building society branch manager.
Inspector Gates (John Bowe) is determined to find out whether Ann is implicated and just what the nature of her friendship with her new Svengali-like English teacher, David Miles (James Purefoy), is.
The murderer is never caught, and life in the conservative, close-knit community apparently returns to normal.
A year later, the brutal murder of Miles’ wife sees Ann needing an alibi. And when she fails to turn up for the school show, the police must track her down.
Aired over two nights in September 1997, Bright Hair was written by Peter Ransley, who adapted it from his novel Bright Hair About The Bone.
