Bourne Supremacy, The (2004) – Nostalgia Central

Two years after the events of The Bourne Identity (2002), former CIA assassin Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) is living in anonymity in Goa, India, with Marie Kreutz (Franka Potente), though he is still plagued by fragmented nightmares of a past assassination mission he cannot fully remember.

His peaceful life is shattered when a ruthless Russian assassin named Kirill (Karl Urban) – who is working for the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) – frames Bourne for the theft of $3 million of CIA funds in Berlin, forcing Bourne out of hiding to clear his name and seek vengeance.

Kirill – who is secretly on the payroll of corrupt Russian oil billionaire Yuri Gretkov (Karel Roden) – travels to Goa to eliminate Bourne but mistakenly kills Marie instead.

Bourne survives and, believing the CIA – headed now by high-ranking Task Force Chief Pamela Landy (Joan Allen) – has come back to hunt him down, vows to dismantle them.

He deliberately triggers a passport alert at a Naples customs office, interrogates the CIA agent sent to detain him, and steals his phone to eavesdrop on CIA communications and track down Landy’s task force in Berlin.

He also tracks down Jarda (Marton Csokas), the only other surviving Treadstone operative, resulting in a brutal, claustrophobic kitchen fight using a rolled-up magazine as a weapon.

Bourne finally uncovers the truth behind his nightmares. His very first Treadstone mission was to assassinate Vladimir Neski, a Russian politician trying to expose the theft of $20 million by rogue CIA Deputy Director Ward Abbott (Brian Cox) and Gretkov.

He travels to Moscow to find Neski’s orphaned daughter, which leads to a crunching car chase through Moscow streets where Bourne, driving a stolen yellow taxi, relentlessly battles Kirill in a Mercedes G-Wagen.

After forcing Abbott to confess (leading to Abbott’s suicide) and surviving the Moscow crash, Bourne tracks down Neski’s daughter, Irena (Oksana Akinshina), to personally apologise for murdering her parents, giving himself his first real sense of humanity.

Sometime later in New York City, Landy is working in her office when her phone rings. It is Bourne.

She thanks him for the evidence implicating Abbott and Gretkov, tells him his real name is David Webb, and asks him to come in.

Bourne looks at her through a sniper scope from an adjacent building, tells her she looks tired, and disappears back into the crowded streets.

The sequel was a massive commercial hit, grossing over $290 million worldwide. The final part of the trilogy – The Bourne Ultimatum – followed in 2007.
