Blending folk, psychedelia, electronica, and trip hop, the highly experimental Beta Band formed in Scotland in 1996 around core members Steve Mason and Gordon Anderson.
Anderson left early on due to illness, and the lineup solidified with the addition of John Maclean (Keyboards and samples), Richard Greentree (Bass) and Robin Jones (Drums).
The band released three boundary-pushing EPs – Champion Versions (1997), The Patty Patty Sound (1998), and Los Amigos del Beta Bandidos (1998) – before collating the tracks into a seminal compilation album, The Three EPs (1998).
The album’s opening track, Dry the Rain, achieved global pop-culture immortality in the 2000 film High Fidelity.
In a famous scene, John Cusack’s record-store owner character, Rob, boasts, “I will now sell five copies of The Three EPs by The Beta Band,” before dropping the needle and instantly mesmerising all the customers in his shop.
Despite immense critical acclaim, the group split in 2004 under the weight of severe debt.
After a 21-year hiatus, they reunited in 2025 for sold-out tours across the UK and US.
