Avatar (2009) – Nostalgia Central

It is the year 2154. When his twin brother is killed in a robbery, paraplegic former Marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) decides to take his place in a mission on the distant world of Pandora.

There, he learns of a plan by greedy corporate figurehead Parker Selfridge (Giovanni Ribisi) to drive off the native Na’vi –  a 10-foot-tall, blue-skinned, sentient humanoid species – in order to mine for the precious mineral called Unobtanium, which is scattered throughout their rich woodland.

In exchange for the spinal surgery that will fix his legs, Jake gathers knowledge of the indigenous race and their culture, for the cooperating military unit spearheaded by gung-ho Colonel Quaritch (Stephen Lang), while simultaneously attempting to infiltrate the Na’vi people with the use of an “avatar”.

Humans cannot breathe Pandora’s air, so they use genetically engineered human-Na’vi hybrid avatars operated remotely via a neural link by matching human pilots.

While Jake begins to bond with the native tribe and quickly falls in love with the beautiful alien Neytiri (Zoë Saldana), the restless Colonel moves forward with his ruthless extermination tactics, forcing the soldier to take a stand – and fight back in an epic battle for the fate of Pandora.

Released in December 2009, Avatar shattered global box office records to become the highest-grossing film of all time (a title it still holds with over $2.9 billion in earnings).

The movie revolutionised cinema through its groundbreaking use of 3D technology, stereoscopic filmmaking, and motion-capture visual effects.

Avatar was nominated for nine Academy Awards, winning three (Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, and Best Art Direction). It also won Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director at the Golden Globes.

The massive success of the film spawned a multi-billion-dollar franchise, including a 2022 sequel (Avatar: The Way of Water), a 2025 release (Avatar: Fire and Ash), video games and a dedicated theme park land at Walt Disney World.
