This serialised cartoon was produced exclusively by CBS Terrytoons for Captain Kangaroo as the official follow-up to Gene Deitch’s pioneering television cartoon Tom Terrific (1957-1961).

Violence-hating cowboy Lariat Sam lived in the town of Bent Saddle. He had a talking, poetry-reading horse named Tippytoes who wore a derby hat, and his sworn enemy was a bumbling villain named Badlands Meeney, who had an equally incompetent ‘assistant villain’ and “yes” man, named J. Skulking Bushwack.

The voices were dubbed by Dayton Allen. Gene Wood sang the theme song.

The animation was by Cosmo Anzilotti, Doug Crane, Mannie Davis, Ed Donnelly and Rube Grossman.

Dayton Allen died on 11 November 2004 in Hendersonville, North Carolina, after suffering a stroke. He was 85.
