Former Young Ones star Nigel Planer starred in this short-lived BBC comedy series as Laurence Didcott – an idealistic but not very effective French teacher, who joins the staff of The Mansion School, a chaotic, crusty, fee-paying independent school.

Laurence is very enthusiastic and wants the kids in his class to call him by his Christian name.

The result is mayhem as the pupils wipe the floor with him, and he upsets the status quo that has reigned at the school for the past 235 years.

His colleagues at The Mansion do not share his missionary zeal.

The headteacher (Nicholas Woodeson) is a money-grabber who believes that school fees – not education – come first, and half the teachers are terminally bored, cynical, or washed up.

Premiering on Monday 15 February 1993, the series was written by Paul Smith and Terry Kyan.
