Space Harrier – Nostalgia Central

Sega’s Space Harrier (1985) presented a surreal, pseudo-3D universe filled with giant centipedes, poisonous mushrooms, and other fantastical creatures.

As the Space Harrier, you had to blast through multiple stages of intense action, shooting everything in sight.

Graphically revolutionary for its time, Space Harrier featured fast-scrolling 3D backgrounds and large, colourful enemies in a cross between a traditional arcade game, a flight sim, and a roller coaster.

Seen from behind the hero, the fast-paced action required quick reflexes to dodge enemy fire by zipping across the screen. The hero could fly or run, giving full control over movement and evasive manoeuvres.

Despite its innovative perspective, Space Harrier remained a classic shoot ’em up at heart. Players used a joystick and trigger to shoot down ships, stone heads (reminiscent of Easter Island), and powerful bosses at the end of each stage.

While it had a definitive ending, reaching it demanded swift reflexes and many quarters.

Its dazzling visuals and rapid gameplay made it a major hit. The game was further enhanced by special full-motion cockpit cabinets that offered players an immersive sensory experience.
