Premiering on Thursday, 30 April 1964, this “series of light-hearted enquiries into matters of no importance” from BBC Scotland featured comedy sketches and songs and took its inspiration from That Was the Week That Was and Dig This Rhubarb (without the topical and political elements).
The show was introduced by future Porridge star Fulton Mackay and starred four young Scottish actors: Una McLean, Gay Hamilton, Tom Conti, and Alex McAvoy.
Themes each week included television, education, marriage and the Scots themselves.
Songs were sung by Jeanie Lambe, accompanied by a quartet comprising Alan Cameron (piano), Jimmy Feighan (vibes), Ricky Fernandez (bass), and Michael Bill (drums).
In May 1964, Mary Whitehouse declared Between The Lines to be “the dirtiest programme that I have seen for a very long time”.
