Every Little Crook and Nanny (1972) – Nostalgia Central

New York mob boss Carmine Ganucci (Victor Mature) evicts English girl Miss Poole (Lynn Redgrave) and her school of etiquette, voice and dance from the commercial building he has just purchased.

He wants the space for one of his illicit businesses, despite Miss Poole having a long-term lease.

When an incensed Miss Poole goes to confront Ganucci about the situation, he mistakes her for an applicant for the role of nanny for his 12-year-old son. Lewis (Phillip Graves).

Carmine and his ex-stripper wife, Stella (Margaret Blye), are leaving for a second honeymoon in his native Italy and need a nanny to care for the boy in their absence.

In her new position as nanny, Miss Poole plans to exact revenge and obtain what she feels is appropriate monetary compensation.

She masterminds a plot to kidnap Lewis – using thoroughly mad pianist Luther Patterson (Austin Pendleton) as an accomplice, without telling him whose son they are taking – and demand a ransom of $50,000 for his return.

Complications and misunderstandings ensue when nanny deals with one of Ganucci’s low-level flunkies, Benny Napkins (Paul Sand), and his bumbling legal eagles, Mario Azzecca (Dom DeLuise) and Vito Garbugli (John Astin), to have the $50,000 ransom paid without letting Ganucci find out about the situation.

The situation is further confused when Carmine cables from Naples for (a different) $50,000 to clinch a little deal in religious medallions – and then decides to return home early.

Meanwhile, Luther’s wife, Ida (Mina Kolb,) is growing fond of having Lewis around.

Victor Mature, perfectly cast in the role, was coaxed out of retirement to play mob boss Carmine Ganucci.
