Smokey Joe’s Revenge (1975) – Nostalgia Central

This Children’s Film Foundation production had young friends Debbie (Kay Humblestone), Jim (Nicky Cox) and Tom (Danny Martyne)restoring a rusty and neglected old steamroller – the “Smokey Joe” of the title.

The children are gifted the machine by Mr Williams (Robert Dorning), who wants to get rid of it because he has bought a well-preserved traction engine, nicknamed “Mirabelle”

With help from PC Grundy (Gareth Thomas) and old Mr Bassett (Tom Owen), the kids restore the steamroller to its former glory – spending their pocket money on paint and many hours of their time working on the engine – and enter it in a steam championship competition.

‘Smokey Joe’ wins, and an angry Mr Williams snatches the cup from the children. But “Smokey Joe” has a mind of its own and comes to the rescue.
