Mild-mannered George Stoody (Bob Newhart) owns Summer Street Books – a quiet little book shop on Martha’s Vineyard.

Leo Wagonman (Judd Hirsch) is a conman and ex-mobster who runs from one jam to another.

The two men become mismatched in-laws when George’s son, Ted (Jason Bateman), marries Leo’s estranged daughter, Casey (Bess Meyer for the first eight episodes and then Robyn Lively).

They meet when Leo arrives from Las Vegas for the wedding and receives a cold reception from the daughter he abandoned years ago.

George is forced to play peacemaker not only with Leo’s daughter but with a mob hitman who wants the bag of casino money that Leo stole, and suddenly, George has an unwanted roommate living above his bookstore.
