This limited run summer replacement sitcom from NBC featured New York deli owner Nathan Singer (Harold Gould), a Jewish widower who had no sons of his own, so decided to turn the business – that has been in his family for over three generations – over to the sons of his long-time black housekeeper, Mrs Patterson (Esther Rolle).
Eldest son Mitchell (Bobby Hosea) was college-educated and divorced, with a young daughter named Deanna (Brooke Fontaine), while younger son Reggie (Tommy Ford) was streetwise.
Other regular characters included Nathan’s meek nephew, Sheldon (Fred Stoller), who worked at the deli alongside Claudia, the street-talking black waitress (Arnetia Walker), and regular customer Lou Gold (Phil Leeds).
